JS - You bring up very good points. GreenPrint actually does support printing more than one page per sheet, it just needs to be set in the print dialogue box right before sending the document to the GreenPrint preview. That way your preview will also show this change. Same goes for duplex (provided your physical printer supports duplex)!

We will definitely be providing the option in the future to selectively remove images, as we know that would be a great tool to have. Unfortunately I cannot give you a specific date, but know it's in the works!

Hi,

Most printing is done on A4 size paper and 75% of that printing is for review or draft purposes. You should give a provision to print two (A4 size) pages in ONE A4 sheet. This can be accmplished by printing (two protrait-style) side-by-side on one landscape mode. For example, MS-Powerpoint provides such a facility. I would love to see such facility in Greenprint. Saving would be 50% (and if duplex is used, a whopping 75%)

Also, a facility to selectively remove pictures would be nice (in most cases, the web page we want to print will have 3 or 4 pictures out of which 2 of them will be just advertisements, which we do not need to print.

I'm curious how you arrive at your "tree savings" calculation. Can you please provide the source?

[...] Rather than taking the time to make sure the e-mail you’re printing out is just the first couple pages, let software do that for you. One piece of software that has been getting a lot of media attention is GreenPrint. As described by the company’s website, “GreenPrint’s patent-pending technology [saves you time and money] by analyzing each page of every document sent to the printer and looking for typical waste characteristics (like that last page with just a URL, banner ad, logo, or legal jargon).” The best part about it? The software is free for home use, and is available for download here. The company has also printed a white paper entitled How to Reduce Printing Costs by 17% - check it out here. [...]

Jeanne,

Thanks for your comment. I understand your want to reuse all wasted pages, but sometimes this isn't a viable option for businesses. That's partially why we are holding this event, so paper that would otherwise get thrown away will be recycled and new trees will be planted. We also want to bring the visual to the public of just how much paper is wasted every day from printing, so maybe they'll reconsider the next time they're about to print something unnecessarily. Rest assured, however, that all paper brought to us will be shredded and recycled (as some documents may be confidential material). I do commend you for your efforts and wish more were as dedicated as you!

I'm a little worried about your paper collection at Pioneer Square. What if people ruin some of the paper in delivering or collecting it -- dog-ear the edges, get it dirty on the ground...? I'd like to use that paper ... and I'm certainly not going to bring you any more....

I retired from the printer division of Hewlett-Packard. During my last couple of years there, whenever I went to pick up a printout at the office LaserJet, I took back with me any paper left behind with only a little print on it. Sometimes a ream or more with one line/page of gobbledygook would result from an encoding error in a single printout. Others were cover sheets. WHen I retired a few years ago, I took the collection home. Next to the small LaserJet I bought the family on employee discount, I put it in one stack and the new paper from Costco in another stack. My family are directed to use the "lightly used" paper when pristine doesn't matter. It's not all gone yet! And we've used only a little of that original box from Costco. So I'd be sorry to see any of that paper you collect ruined but not put back in the machines!

The majority of appliance, even phone charges use energy when plugged in even if not in use. Best bet is to unplug appliances, computers and chargers when not in use.

Elena's mom is right. We're all in this together. We too are on the green wave of change. Reduce, reuse, recycle are words to live by. Since 1995 Sterling Laser Inc. has been saving trees, reducing green house gases and reducing waste here in the Pacific Northwest. Please remember, remanufacturing toner cartridges is closed-loop recycling.
