GreenPrint’s 36″ Forest

Come trade your wasted pages for trees!

Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland, Oregon

When: August 11, 2008 9a.m. - 5.p.m.

GreenPrint’s holding an event that we’re really excited about and we want you and your office to come join us and help build “The 36″ Forest.” Save all those wasted stacks of paper next to your printer and bring them down to Pioneer Square. For every 36″ stack of paper, we’ll plant a tree on your behalf! The average tree produces 9,000 sheets of paper. 9,000 sheets = 18 reams = 36″ = 1 tree.

After you’ve brought down your paper, you can also pick up a free copy of GreenPrint World to use on your home computer.

Hope to see you there!

I’m a little worried about your paper collection at Pioneer Square. What if people ruin some of the paper in delivering or collecting it — dog-ear the edges, get it dirty on the ground…? I’d like to use that paper … and I’m certainly not going to bring you any more….

I retired from the printer division of Hewlett-Packard. During my last couple of years there, whenever I went to pick up a printout at the office LaserJet, I took back with me any paper left behind with only a little print on it. Sometimes a ream or more with one line/page of gobbledygook would result from an encoding error in a single printout. Others were cover sheets. WHen I retired a few years ago, I took the collection home. Next to the small LaserJet I bought the family on employee discount, I put it in one stack and the new paper from Costco in another stack. My family are directed to use the “lightly used” paper when pristine doesn’t matter. It’s not all gone yet! And we’ve used only a little of that original box from Costco. So I’d be sorry to see any of that paper you collect ruined but not put back in the machines!

    Jeanne,

Thanks for your comment. I understand your want to reuse all wasted pages, but sometimes this isn’t a viable option for businesses. That’s partially why we are holding this event, so paper that would otherwise get thrown away will be recycled and new trees will be planted. We also want to bring the visual to the public of just how much paper is wasted every day from printing, so maybe they’ll reconsider the next time they’re about to print something unnecessarily. Rest assured, however, that all paper brought to us will be shredded and recycled (as some documents may be confidential material). I do commend you for your efforts and wish more were as dedicated as you!
