Installation

Pre-requirements

  1. GreenPrint installation is quick and easy, but an additional Microsoft component needs to be installed first. To find out if your computer already has it installed, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (In Vista: Control Panel > Programs and Features). If Version 3.5 SP1 isn't listed there, use the link below to download and install prior to starting the GreenPrint installation:

    Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

  2. GreenPrint installation also requires an Administrator account on Windows. To check go to Control Panel > User Accounts and verify that your account is a “Computer administrator”. If it’s not, click on “Change an account” and then “Change my account type” to enable administrator access.

To install GreenPrint:

  1. Install .NET 3.5 SP1
  2. Uninstall any older version of GreenPrint from your computer by going to Start > All Programs > GreenPrint > Uninstall GreenPrint.
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Download the installer and save it to your desktop
  5. Double click on the installer to start installation
  6. Click "I Agree and Install" to accept the End User License Agreement
  7. Installation is completed
  8. After installation you will notice that you have a new printer called GreenPrint and that it has become your default printer.

Differences Between Version 1 & Version 2

GreenPrint Version 2 has been completely redesigned from scratch, so in addition to significant performance and feature enhancements, there are a few key differences to be aware of when making the switch:

  • Double clicking on a page no longer removes/includes the page, instead it takes you to a single page view. To remove/include a page, click on it and then make a selection from the hover.

  • The Remove Text tool is located in the Page Tools section at the top of the preview instead of in the right click menu.

  • PDF creation is available from the preview by clicking the PDF button. There is not a separate GreenPrint PDF printer in V2.

  • You can access your GreenPrint Report by clicking on the report summary section at the bottom of the preview (you can also still get to it from the Start menu > All Programs > GreenPrint.

  • To adjust the GreenPrint filters, go to Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > GreenPrint > Printing Preferences > Rules (In Vista: Control Panel > Printers > GreenPrint > Printing Preferences). You can also make these changes for individual applications by clicking on Preferences/Properties in the print dialog box.

  • How do I set my default target/output printer for GreenPrint?

To set the printer that GreenPrint will print to by default, go to Start > Control Panel > Printers & Faxes (or just Printers in Vista), right click on the GreenPrint printer and go to Printing Preferences, then under Target Printer choose the printer that you print to the most often with GreenPrint. Hit Apply and OK.

If you'd like to change the output printer for an individual print job, but don't want to change your default setting, you should do this by going to File > Print within the application you're using (Word, Firefox, etc.). On the print dialog box make sure GreenPrint is selected as the printer, then click on the Properties/Preferences button, and select the target printer there. This setting will only apply for that session within the specific application you're using.

Why is GreenPrint slow the first time I use it after restarting my computer?

Unfortunately GreenPrint requires the Microsoft .NET Framework to work on your computer. After you restart your computer this framework has to be activated in order for GreenPrint to work. Because of this, the first time you use GreenPrint it will take a little longer for the preview to appear, but the time to preview should be much faster from there on out. We're working hard to find a fix for this issue and will keep you posted.

Why does GreenPrint sometimes make mistakes when detecting waste pages?

One case in which this often happens is when printing PDFs. Some PDFs appear to GreenPrint as though each page is one image, rather than a combination of text and images or whatever the case may be. This could cause pages to be flagged as waste when they are not. If all of the pages in your document are flagged as waste, we suggest using Control + A on your keyboard to select all pages, and then choose Include Pages from the hover.

Another case when GreenPrint could make a mistake is if a page looks entirely blank to you, but it actually contains some hidden images so it does not get flagged as waste. In this case we recommend using the Remove Page option on the hover.

Don't forget that you can also customize the GreenPrint filters by going to Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > GreenPrint > Printing Preferences > Rules (In Vista: Control Panel > Printers > GreenPrint > Printing Preferences).
