GreenPrint offers to donate its software to the federal government to benefit Gulf environment and economy.
PORTLAND, OR — June 9, 2010 — GreenPrint Technologies today offered to donate licenses of its enterprise software to all federal employees, creating printing savings estimated to be worth $200 - 440 million annually for the federal government.
The donation, thought to be the first of its kind, was offered with the aim of helping to create a trust to benefit the states affected by the Gulf oil spill. The money would provide additional resources to assist with cleanup and restoration efforts over the next decade to benefit both the environment and the economy.
"We wanted to do much more than what was possible through individual donations in the office," said GreenPrint CEO Hayden Hamilton "It finally occurred to us that if we donated our software to the federal government, and the saving could be redirected to Gulf recovery efforts, it would have a very substantial impact for years to come."
A 2009 Government Printing Report by Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) calculates federal government printing costs to be $1.3 billion annually, of which it estimates $440 million is waste. Over four years, the typical lifespan calculation for technology, that amounts to more than $1.7 billion in savings. GreenPrint’s licenses are valid in perpetuity, however, so the total savings could be much higher, amounting to as much as $4.4 billion over the next decade.
"Our hope is that an additional billion dollars or more over 5-10 years will have a meaningful impact for the environment, the wildlife, and the people living near the Gulf as they try to recover from this unprecedented disaster," said Hamilton.
GreenPrint software analyzes each page of every document sent to the printer and looks for typical waste characteristics (e.g. pages with just a URL, banner ad, or legal jargon). It then highlights and offers to remove those pages, saving paper, ink, and trees. GreenPrint allows users to easily remove images, text, and entire pages with a single click before printing, resulting in significant print reduction. GreenPrint saves the average user over $75 and 1,300 wasted pages per year, which is precisely measured by print analytics functionality and quantified in ecological and cost-saving metrics.
